Eight hours into the 2026 Bol d’Or, the EWC championship chase has swung in favour of BMW Motorrad World Endurance Team. By leading at the first major checkpoint, the #37 crew nets maximum bonus points, putting direct pressure on YART Yamaha as night falls over Circuit Paul Ricard.
BMW maximises points
At the end of the first eight-hour stretch, the #37 BMW M1000RR bagged a maximum of ten bonus points towards the FIM EWC standings. In contrast, current championship leaders YART Yamaha (#1) collected seven points for their fourth-place status, allowing the Belgian team to trim the overall gap by three points.
Despite the momentum shift, the #37 outfit is taking nothing for granted with two thirds of the race still to run. Endurance racing remains notoriously unpredictable, a reality BMW learned the hard way in 2025 when a mechanical failure robbed them of victory just 27 minutes from the finish line.
On track, Markus Reiterberger, Steven Odendaal, and Michael van der Mark have established a solid 1:30s buffer over the #5 F.C.C. TSR Honda France. The lead was largely constructed on the pit lane, where superior fuel economy allowed the BMW entry to execute longer stints and minimise pit stops.
Pit lane drama for YART
The battle for third position took a turn after Hour 5. Having staged an impressive early charge, the #1 YART Yamaha ridden by Karel Hanika, Marvin Fritz, and Leandro Mercado proved unable to fend off the #12 Yoshimura SERT Motul Suzuki, which claimed the final spot in the top three.
YART’s troubles multiplied during a routine pit service shortly after, when the team inadvertently released Karel Hanika on the #1 bike with the rear paddock stand still attached to the wheel assembly, costing valuable seconds. The Czech rider had to bring the bike to an immediate halt at the pit exit to pull it out before rejoining the action.
AutoRace Ube Run out of the race
Further down the order, the race claimed its sixth casualty. Following a crash that had delayed it by 40 minutes earlier on, the #76 AutoRace Ube Racing Team BMW then caught fire on the side of the track, forcing an immediate retirement.
#38 leads Bol d’Or for Superstock category
In the Superstock division, the #38 Champion-Hert Powered by MRP BMW enjoyed a dominant opening third. Running seventh overall, the crew of Bálint Kovács, Jan Bühn, Loris Cresson, and Máté Számadó currently holds the SST lead. A result that would seal the Superstock World Cup crown if maintained to the finish.
