What’s at stake for MotoGP at the Austrian GP

MotoGP returns to the Red Bull Ring for Round 15 of the 2026 season on the heels of a decisive San Marino GP, where Marc Márquez snatched the championship lead from Jorge Martín.

Following a dominant double victory in Misano, winning both the Sprint and the main Grand Prix, Márquez now leads the standings over the former leader. Though the two riders are tied on points, Márquez holds the tiebreaker thanks to his higher win count.

With five Grand Prix victories this season, the nonuple World Champion has racked up more wins than anyone else on the grid, capping off a remarkable 102-point comeback since Mugello by claiming three double victories in the last four rounds.

Pole-sitter on home soil last weekend, Marco Bezzecchi sits third in the standings, 33 points adrift of Márquez. The San Marino GP proved painful for the Italian, who crashed on the opening lap in front of his home crowd.

On a brighter note, Bezzecchi’s shoulder and knee are continuing to heal, and he will look to secure Aprilia’s maiden victory on Styrian soil this weekend.

On the other side of the Aprilia garage, Jorge Martín aims to take his second win at the Red Bull Ring, following his breakthrough premier-class victory there in 2021.

Ducati leads Constructor’s championship ahead of Aprilia

In the Constructors’ Championship, Ducati currently leads Aprilia by just two points (412 to 410), despite both factories holding seven wins apiece this season. Nevertheless, Ducati should feel at home on the Red Bull Ring’s stop-and-go layout, characterised by long straights and heavy braking zones.

The Borgo Panigale brand is the track’s most successful manufacturer, boasting 10 wins across 12 Grands Prix since the track returned to the MotoGP calendar in 2016.

Though Aprilia has yet to stand on the top step at Spielberg, a strong reaction from the Noale factory is expected following a tough weekend in Misano for both Martín and Bezzecchi.

Despite Ducati’s track record, Márquez himself historically struggled at Spielberg. Prior to his 2020 injury, it was the only circuit on the calendar where he had raced but never won. He finally broke the spell in 2025 with a solid double victory.

This weekend also marks KTM’s home Grand Prix, the last with their current rider pairing of Pedro Acosta and Brad Binder before Fabio Di Giannantonio and Álex Márquez take over the factory seats next season.

Binder’s last MotoGP victory notably came at this very track during a memorable 2021 race.

The pressure is firmly on the Mattighofen factory to perform on home soil, especially following a string of recent engine reliability issues. The Austrian is “still far,” admitted Acosta regarding their current pace in the Thursday press conference.

Meanwhile, Yamaha faces another uphill battle on a circuit that heavily rewards horsepower.

Ogura is back, still no Viñales, Mir out

Elsewhere on the grid, Ai Ogura returns to Trackhouse Racing after missing two Grands Prix due to a thumb injury. Maverick Viñales remains sidelined, with test rider Pol Espargaró continuing to substitute for him at Tech3, marking Espargaró’s 300th Grand Prix start.

Over at Honda HRC, Takaaki Nakagami steps in for Joan Mir on medical advice, giving the Japanese rider valuable track time ahead of his wildcard appearance at Motegi.

The stakes are equally high, if not higher, in the lightweight class. KTM leads the Moto3 Constructors’ Standings with 173 points and could wrap up an eighth title on home turf if they depart Spielberg with a lead of 175 points or more.
