Honda HRC has confirmed its signing of current Moto2 star David Alonso on a multi-year deal ahead of the 2027 MotoGP season.
Alonso has been highly-rated throughout his junior career, winning the 2020 European Talent Cup and the 2021 Red Bull Rookies championship.
He first caught attention on the grand prix ladder with his maiden Moto3 victory at the 2023 British GP after starting last on the grid.
The Colombian rider’s career progressed rapidly from there on, winning the 2024 Moto3 World Championship and setting the record for the most wins in a season with 14.
Alonso has since competed in Moto2 and currently sits fourth in the standings, with Honda beating competition to sign the talented youngster.
In a press release, Honda said: “Honda Racing Corporation are pleased to confirm the signing of David Alonso on a multi-year contract for the MotoGP World Championship.
The 20-year-old Colombian has authored one of the most impressive runs through the lightweight classes in recent times, finishing third as a Moto3 rookie in 2023 before dominating the class the following year.
“Currently in his second season in the Moto2 World Championship, Alonso took his maiden intermediate class win at the 2025 Hungarian Grand Prix and currently sits fourth overall in the 2026 title hunt.
“With a total of 20 wins, 30 podiums and nine pole positions across Moto3 and Moto2, Alonso has continued to surpass expectations.
“He will make his debut on the 2027 Honda machine at the post-race Valencia Test.”
There is no confirmation as to which team Alonso will ride for, with the Colombian initially expected to join the factory team before Diogo Moreira’s impressive start to his MotoGP career.
