Will Power suffered a heavy crash in IndyCar qualifying, ending his chances of earning a grid position near the front of the field.

Power’s troubles happened early in the first round of qualifying, with no full push laps under his belt.

While attempting to set what he hoped was a competitive time, the rear brakes on his Andretti Global Honda failed while storming down into Turn 5.

Power was powerless to stop his car, and he careened over the gravel trap and hard into the tire barriers nose first.

He climbed from the car and took a few moments to gather himself, but was quickly released from the medical center and confirmed shortly after that he had no warning before the incident.

“Yeah, the brake just went to the floor,” confirmed Power to Fox Sports. “I think the fronts were working, so it was a brake failure on the rear. That’s all I know.

“We’ll find the problem, it’s no big deal. It’s just a pity for qualifying. We had a good car. I haven’t had a clean lap this weekend.

“But the car is actually pretty good. I thought we would make it through to the Fast Six, or definitely the Top 12. It’s unfortunate.

“Definitely found the wall quite a few times this year already; it’s incredible. That’s how things go sometimes. We’ll go look to see what happened, and the guys will fix the car. Starting from last, but you can definitely win from there.”

Power has had multiple crashes this season, including a couple in the opening round in St. Petersburg that also appeared to be caused by brake problems.

He starts 23rd for Sunday’s Children’s of Alabama Indy GP and will hope to climb through the field quickly.
