Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing has announced that Mick Schumacher will drive for the team for the 2026 NTT IndyCar Series season.
Schumacher, son of Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher, will come stateside for a full-fledged effort in America’s open wheel scene.
The 26-year-old will contest the entire IndyCar schedule, including the Indianapolis 500 and the rest of the season’s oval events.
Schumacher will use the #47 entry, the team eschewing its traditional #30 entry in order to give their new driver his preferred number.
“I think I speak for everyone at RLL when I say how thrilled we are to welcome Mick to the team and to IndyCar,” said RLL co-owner Bobby Rahal.
“His test with us on the IMS road course was exceptional – he impressed every single team member.
“Everyone walked away from that event determined to do what we could to bring Mick into our program. We’re thrilled he’s chosen to join us, and we can’t wait to get to work.”
Schumacher completed a test with RLL recently, turning laps on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course.
At that time, he related how much he loved being in a single-seater again after recent seasons spent racing prototype sportscars in WEC.
The German driver has plenty of open wheel experience, including two full seasons in F1 driving for the HAAS F1 team.
He will likely find a lot of joy as he gets up to speed in his new assignment. More oval testing is scheduled ahead of the 2026 season to make sure he is prepared for the year ahead.
Schumacher is the third confirmed rookie for next year, joining IndyNXT graduates Caio Collet and Dennis Hauger.
He will also be team-mates with last season’s Rookie of the Year Louis Foster, with Graham Rahal being the team’s only veteran driver.
RLL has seemingly parted ways with Devlin DeFrancesco, despite having an agreement to keep the Canadian on for the 2026 season.
