The NTT IndyCar Series has announced that Mexico City will not be included on the series’ 2026 schedule.
IndyCar has been working to secure a race at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez for multiple years, hoping among of things to capitalize on its star driver Pato O’Ward’s popularity.
The Mexican driver finished second in the championship this year and brings throngs of fans with him to every event.
IndyCar appeared to be very close to securing a deal for a race at the track that hosts Formula 1, Formula E, and even NASCAR in recent years, but it has been confirmed that a deal could not be reached.
The upcoming World Cup, which is being held at venues across North America next year and has already contributed to a relocation of IndyCar’s sole Canadian event, was listed as one of the major hurdles.
“For more than a year, we have been working diligently to bring the NTT IndyCar Series to Mexico City’s Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez,” Penske Entertainment President and CEO Mark Miles said.
“While extensive progress was made alongside the venue’s operating group and our potential promoter, ultimately the significant impact of next year’s World Cup proved too challenging to ensure a successful event given the available summer dates.
“While we absolutely want to race in Mexico, we also want to ensure everyone involved feels the conditions are in place to plan a world-class and highly engaging race weekend.
“We will keep working to bring our racing to Mexico and hope for an event to be on the schedule as soon as the right opportunity presents itself.”
IndyCar’s final 2026 schedule has not yet been released, although it appears to be nearly finalized with the confirmation of Mexico’s absence.
The nearest race for Mexican fans of O’Ward will be the new Arlington street course event which will be held around the Dallas Cowboys stadium on March 13-15.
