Tom Blomqvist of Meyer Shank Racing praised IMSA’s decision to switch their race meeting at Road America into a six-hour enduro for 2026.
“I mean, in my opinion, it’s awesome that IMSA has made that change,” he said in a press conference, when asked by Motorsport Week about the calendar decision.
“I think every single driver on the grid is in favour of bringing a six-hour race to Road America, like I said before, for me, it’s the best, well, my favourite track at least.
“I’m sure [for] a number of others as well. So from that side of things, it’s great.
“We want the longer races at the best places […] The weather’s typically a bit better.
“The fans as well, and generally we always get a good kind of crowd there.
“I think it’s just such a great, great move from IMSA, and then in terms of the race, yeah, you have to approach it a little bit differently.
“Some teams may even run three drivers. In our case, we typically try and run two.
“But it’s just more like qualifying is a little less important. It’s a slightly different approach strategically as well.
“You’re always trying to position yourself towards the end of the race, right?
“And that’s kind of more of a target than the shorter race, which is a bit [about] more track position.
“There’s a little less you can do, especially with our cars now that we can go so long on fuel or energy.”
Blomqvist claimed victory in the most recent race for the GTP category, the six-hour endurance race at Watkins Glen International.
He sits sixth in the GTP standings, seeking another win at Round 8, a 160-minute sprint race.
