Fabio Di Giannantonio set a stunning lap to break the all-time lap record to top the second practice session at the German MotoGP.
The Italian waited until the end of the session to set his best time, with his 1:19.071 the fastest ever lap around the Sachsenring circuit.
Marc Marquez looked to be in control at the top of the timesheets early in the session, but was forced into a save at Turn 10 and then ran wide at the first corner whilst yellow flags were out for a crash from Fermin Aldeguer.
Despite briefly losing top spot to Pedro Acosta and Jack Miller as the field started their qualifying runs, Marquez returned to the top of the standings while running the medium tyres.
Alex Marquez headed to the top of the pile with a minute left on the clock, before Di Giannantonio set the best lap of the weekend to break the all-time lap record.
The younger Marquez finished second ahead of elder brother Marc in third.
Fabio Quartararo took the flag in fourth, while Acosta was narrowly behind the Frenchman in fifth.
Franco Morbidelli was five-tenths off his team-mate’s best time in sixth as Marco Bezzecchi recovered from an early crash in seventh.
Miller continued a strong showing in eighth ahead of Francesco Bagnaia in ninth, while Brad Binder rounded out the top 10.
Maverick Vinales narrowly missed out on an automatic Q2 spot in 11th, with Johann Zarco finishing 12th after a crash at the end of the session.
The Trackhouse pair finished 13th and 14th respectively, with Ai Ogura leading team-mate Raul Fernandez.
Joan Mir completed the session in 15th, while Aldeguer crashed twice and ended practice in 16th.
Miguel Oliveira concluded practice in 17th ahead of the returning Luca Marini in 18th.
Alex Rins was 1.597s off the best time in 19th, as Lorenzo Savador completed the standings in 20th.
