At the scene of where it all began 75 years ago, Formula 1 returned to Silverstone for another British Grand Prix wet weather classic, but who rolled back the years as we reached the halfway point of the 2025 season?

Lando Norris: 9

The conditions couldn’t have been more challenging at Silverstone, but powered by his new Landostand at Stowe, the Brit made few errors to take victory.

Starting on the second row, Norris capitalised on Max Verstappen spinning and team-mate Oscar Piastri being penalised to take a first-ever win on home soil.

Oscar Piastri: 7

Despite being the first driver to out-qualify Norris around Silverstone, the Australian would have to settle for second place on race day.

The championship leader started on the front row and took the lead early on as Verstappen’s Red Bull floundered around with no grip.

Piastri looked all set to romp to victory until a slip-up under the Safety Car earned him a 10-second penalty that handed Norris the win.

Nico Hulkenberg: 9.5

The German has spearheaded a renaissance for Sauber in recent races and once again showed he’s not lost an ounce of talent at the age of 38 at Silverstone.

Despite starting 19th for the second weekend in a row, the veteran played the strategy calls to perfection to storm up the order, making his way into the top five.

The German then passed Lance Stroll to move into the podium places, but still had to repel the charging home hero Lewis Hamilton in the latter stages.

But hold him off he did, finishing comfortably ahead of the lead Ferrari to finally dispel his podium demons and stand on an F1 rostrum after 239 attempts.

Gabriel Bortoleto: 3

The Brazilian couldn’t recreate the highs of Austria this time around, spinning off at Turn 2 after an early gamble on slicks backfired in the sister Sauber car.

Lewis Hamilton: 8.5

With Ferrari more competitive in practice at Silverstone, there was hope Hamilton could continue his astonishing home record of 12 consecutive podiums.

But it wasn’t to be; a mistake on his final Q3 lap cost him a shot at the front row, and the SF-25’s issues in the wet ensured that a top-three finish eluded him.

At points it looked like vintage Hamilton on home soil, but a twitchy Ferrari in wet-to-dry conditions was too much for even him to wrangle to the rostrum.

Charles Leclerc: 4

From the podium in Spielberg one week ago, it was a weekend to forget for Leclerc at Silverstone.

Having scolded himself in qualifying after a mistake at the final corner left him sixth on the grid, Sunday would make his mood no better.

A strategy gamble for the slicks on the formation lap put Leclerc on the back foot, while a late trip through the gravel consigned him to 14th place.

Max Verstappen: 7.5

Having stunned everyone on Saturday with a mesmerising pole lap to pip the two McLaren drivers, conditions on race day were not in the Dutchman’s favour.

A low downforce rear-wing configuration for qualifying left Verstappen with his hands tied behind his back as the rain fell.

After avoiding Piastri’s “erratic” braking, a spin as the cars went racing again would leave the Dutchman in 10th and even more work to do than envisaged.

But as the track dried, he managed to climb back up to fifth, ultimately losing another eight points to Piastri as his gap in the championship grew to 69 points.

Yuki Tsunoda: 3.5

The classic British weather was the last thing Tsunoda needed as he still struggles to get to grips with the RB21.

Red Bull revealed the Japanese driver suffered from engine issues on his flying laps in Q2, which cost him a run into Q3, ending up 11th on the grid after penalties were applied.

However, on race day, Tsunoda once again made no forward progress whatsoever.

Being one of the gamblers for slicks left him a mountain to climb to earn points, and picking up a 10-second penalty for a collision with Oliver Bearman didn’t help.

Coming home a lap down and last once again, Tsunoda will welcome the three-week break between now and Spa-Francochamps in his quest to survive at Red Bull.

Pierre Gasly: 9

The Frenchman once again worked wonders with his Alpine on Saturday, dragging the car last in the championship to Q3 for a seventh time in 2025.

And he would go on to claim Alpine’s first points since the Spanish Grand Prix and a best result of the season for the Anglo-French marque with sixth.

Franco Colapinto: 3

A crash in Q1 led to a pitlane start that the Argentine couldn’t take as he was stuck in second gear prior to the race start at a time when his future is in the balance.

Lance Stroll: 8

Stroll managed to harness his wet-weather talent to turn another disappointing Q1 exit into a first points finish in a Grand Prix since the race in China in March.

Aston Martin optimised the pitstop timing on Stroll’s side as the conditions changed, though late struggles with degradation saw him squander a greater result.

Fernando Alonso: 7

Despite complaining on the radio that his team mismanaged his race, Alonso made it four consecutive races in the points, backing up team-mate Stroll in ninth.

Alex Albon: 7.5

Having not finished the last three Grands Prix, Albon secured a welcome return to the points at his team’s home race.

Starting 14th, Albon kept his car on track and made the right calls to capitalise on other drivers’ mistakes to take eighth at the chequered flag.

Carlos Sainz: 7

Despite being promoted into the top 10 due to grid penalties elsewhere, Sainz rued his misfortune as Leclerc’s wide moment at Stowe cost him a points return.

George Russell: 5.5

Although he produced a stunning lap to prop up fourth on the grid, it would be another home race to forget for the Mercedes man.

Pitting onto the slicks on the formation lap was not the best call, and a subsequent misstep to the slicks late on saw him have a scary moment at Maggots and Becketts.

Also the decision to only use the Hard tyres when the track was in a drier condition meant Russell could only muster 10th at the flag, his worst result bar Monaco in 2025.

Andrea Kimi Antonelli: 5

Starting 10th after his three-place grid penalty was applied, Antonelli was the victim of poor visibility in the incident between himself and Isack Hadjar.

The Mercedes driver was rear-ended when the Frenchman miscalculated the closing speed going into Copse, consigning Antonelli to another retirement.

Oliver Bearman: 5.5

It was a rollercoaster first trip to Silverstone in F1 for Oliver Bearman, who picked up an avoidable 10-place grid drop when he crashed in the pit lane during FP3.

That meant he was unable to start as high as eighth and dropped to 18th. But in an incident-packed race, he was unable to capitalise to salvage some points.

The Briton experienced several trips across the grass, including in a late incident with team-mate Esteban Ocon, ensuring that he crossed the line in 11th place.

Esteban Ocon: 6

Both qualifying nd race day were scuppered for Ocon through matters truly out of his control.

He was sent out into the path of Verstappen in Q2, therefore flat-spotting his tyres in avoidance and missing out on the opportunity to improve his position.

Starting 14th, he was the meat in the sandwich between Yuki Tsunoda and Liam Lawson on Lap 1, as well as being collected by his team-mate in the latter stages.

Isack Hadjar: 3

Hadjar suffered a scary crash at Copse on Lap 17 when a lack of visibility on the restart left him blind to the Mercedes of Antonelli slowing ahead.

Liam Lawson: N/A

Having taken a career-best finish in Austria, it was back to reality with a heavy bang at Silverstone as Lawson was the victim of a ‘three-into-one doesn’t go’ manoeuvre.

I am a little concerned about the continued bias towards English drivers in the F1 commentary on FOX but it is not unexpected. they can be at the back of the field and if you listened to the commentary alone you would think they are fighting for the lead.. However I would expect better from Motorsport week. The rating for Norris Albon and Hamilton reflected a disproportionate leaning towards English drivers in your driver ratings. Piastri, and Verstappen deserved higher ratings. Gasly was also over rated.
