Saturday morning was reserved for a second IndyCar practice session on the historic Road America circuit.
Temperatures were already climbing and winds were gusting, foreshadowing how bad it would be for qualifying later in the day.
The driver that was able to get the most out of the hot track was Christian Lundgaard, who completed a lap in 1:45.3412.
The Arrow McLaren driver was fifth in the opening session, and he confirmed that his pace is real this weekend by hinting that he had even more pace in the car.
Championship points leader Alex Palou was second fastest, followed closed by Will Power in third.
Power was one of a couple drivers that spun while braking for the tricky downhill Turn 5.
His Team Penske team-mate Scott McLaughlin very nearly went around himself, but was able to keep pointing the right direction after dropping his left side tires into the grass.
Robert Shwartzman also spun into Turn 5, but was also able to get himself going without outside assistance.
A few drivers also took trips through the gravel as they pushed the limits, including last week’s winner Kyle Kirkwood who ended fourth on the timesheets.
Despite the track being the longest on the calendar and Saturday morning’s running only counting as practice, there were a couple fights for track position.
Colton Herta and Santino Ferrucci very nearly touched wheels as the latter pushed the former off into the rumple strips.
Filling out the bottom two positions were the two Juncos Hollinger Racing drivers.
Conor Daly and Sting Ray Robb will need some adjustments ahead of qualifying if they are to earn a competitive grid position.
Only a couple hours of downtime await the drivers before they head back out to battle the brutal conditions once again.
