The NTT IndyCar Series has penalized three drivers following the Indianapolis 500, resulting in each forfeiting their results.
Marcus Ericsson, Kyle Kirkwood, and Callum Ilott’s cars were all found to be out of compliance in post-race technical inspection.
The highest finishing driver of the three was Ericsson, who crossed the line second and was originally awarded 45 championship points for his result.
Kirkwood was originally scored in sixth and Ilott in 12th, meaning the penalties were costly to all entries involved.
All three drivers were moved to the back of the running order and were placed 31st, 32nd, and 33rd on the official race results that were posted on Monday.
Ericsson and Kirkwood, both Andretti Global drivers, were found to have modified Dallara-supplied parts near the suspension mounting points.
The unapproved spacers could potentially have had aerodynamic, and thus performance, advantages that were outside the bounds of the rules.
In Ilott’s case, IndyCar officials found that PREMA had modified the endplate on the side of the front wing.
Rule 9.3.1, which relates to teams or personnel engaging in unsportsmanlike conduct detrimental to racing, was cited in all cases, meaning IndyCar likely felt the modifications were intentional and intended to circumvent the rules.
In addition to the lost championship points and prize money payouts, all three entries were issued a $100,000 fine.
The team managers of each entry have also been placed on a one-race suspension, which will be served at the upcoming race on the streets of Detroit.
As a result of the penalties, David Malukas moves forward one position to second, and Pato O’Ward earned a podium place instead of fourth.
Drivers finishing 13th and below have been moved forward three positions, including Scott McLaughlin who crashed before the green flag and was originally scored in 33rd.
