Stefano Gattuso reflected on a ‘strong performance’ after Proton Competition’s #88 Ford Mustang LMGT3 secured second position at Spa.

Speaking to Motorsport Week after the fourth FIA World Endurance Championship round, he said:

“We show a very good performance like a team with my teammates, and also all the guys in the garage.

“So we are very happy about it because we worked very hard since Qatar for having a very good car and for fighting for the top.

“And today we were very close to the top, but we are happy about it, and also we are happy for Le Mans in the next race.”

Gattuso, undergoing his maiden WEC campaign for Proton, is responsible for taking the race start in the #88 Ford with team-mates Dennis Olsen and Giammarco Levorato continuing the momentum.

The Italian driver started fourth but immediately began to push forward, albeit still managing his tyres during the tension.

‘The first stint was good, the start was very good,” he added.

“I gained one position immediately, and then we started with our strategy.

“We made a lot of fights, but very good fights.

“It was very nice in the end… every lap was good because we were in the top, and in the position that counts [and] is good for a clean race.

“The goal was not to make any mistakes and arrive safely at the end with good pace.”

In the final moments of the race, while Alessio Rovera extended a substantial 20-second gap in the lead, Dennis Olsen fended off the other #21 AF Corse Ferrari 296 LMGT3 in his pursuit to prevent a 1-2 for the Maranello outfit.

The #88 crew were successful in doing so after Ferrari commanded Hypercar.
