The father of Sergio Perez has revealed he would welcome his son joining Formula E, as he prepares to spend 2025 in the Formula 1 wilderness.

Perez was, as expected by many, fired from Red Bull upon the conclusion of the 2024 championship in favour of Racing Bulls’ Liam Lawson, and with the timing so late, there were no vacancies across the pit lane for him to fill.

The Mexican is now facing 2025 out in the cold, but father Antonio has appeared to give his son a career lifeline, stating that FE will soon become the world’s premier single-seater championship.

Speaking to Estadio Deportes at the Mexico City E-Prix – having appeared on the podium as part of the trophy ceremony – Perez Sr said: “I would never have imagined Formula E and I would be careful because we could have Checo Pérez racing here.

“Of course, without any problem, [he could race in Formula E] the category has been around for 11 years, it is very young, today it is number two in the world and within the next five years it will be number one.

“That is why I am here. I am looking forward to what comes next.”

Perez Sr was present at a sellout Mexico City E-Prix, and stated his belief that the champions will overtake F1 as the biggest single-seater series

Sergio Perez would be ‘welcome’ in FE, says co-founder

The remarks by the father of Sergio Perez were corroborated by Alberto Longo, Formula E’s co-founder, who told the same publication: “We welcome him with open arms.

“I also say that it is not the decision of the championship’s promoters, which is us, but rather his decision and then that of the main teams because in the end, they are the ones who decide who sits in each of their cars.”

Perez spent four seasons with the Milton Keynes squad, scoring five wins and playing a supporting role for Max Verstappen as he took successive world titles in every season the pair were team-mates.

After finishing second in the 2023 Drivers’ Championship, Perez’s 2024 saw his form drop. finishing eighth in the standings, leading boss Christian Horner to pluck Kiwi Lawson from its junior team.

Perez has been a longstanding part of the furniture in F1, having made his debut with Sauber in 2011, having been part of the Ferrari Driver Academy.

After three podiums in his second season, Perez switched to McLaren, but the union was not a happy or successful one, and moved to Force India in 2014, where he would stay as it transitioned into Racing Point, with whom he finally took his first win in the Sakhir Grand Prix in 2020.

Perez joined Red Bull in a move that went against the grain, the team often opting to promote its Toro Rosso – later AlphaTauri – drivers.

His first season saw him take victory in Baku, and also put-up a dogged display of defensive driving from Lewis Hamilton in the final round in Abu Dhabi as he attempted to aid Verstappen in his title bid.
