Luke Browning claims dramatic F3 British GP pole position

Browning clinched pole for Hitech.

Championship leader Luke Browning re-affirmed his strong form with a magnificent pole position around Silverstone during a session heavily influenced by the rain.

Dino Beganovic and Browning both went wide into Copse during his first run of the session, while Noel Leon topped the standings after the first flying lap.

MP’s Alex Funne got into P2 with Gabriele Mini completing the first top three of the qualifying.

Home hero Browning was unable to complete a banker lap during the first stint and went into the pits hoping that the rain wouldn’t arrive before he went out again for another attempt.

There was a similar situation for Beganovic but he stayed on track while the rain started to get heavier while he was trying to complete his first lap.

Nonetheless, the conditions made the track worse and prevented all drivers from further improving.

With the rain worsening this was, on paper, the end of the qualifying session to the delight of Noel Leon and the VAR team.

“Keep raining, keep raining, keep raining,” the Mexican driver said on the radio.

Alex Dunne will start from the front row.

The weather conditions pictured a very unusual provisional field for both the Sprint and Feature races of the weekend.

With less than 5 minutes to go, when it seemed like the session was over for everybody, the drivers went out again with only three minutes to try and improve their laps as soon as the rain was over

Surprisingly, the green sectors started appearing on the time screens with even some purple ones.

This ended up being basically a one-shot shootout for pole position.

Callum Voisin was the first to improve the reference time set by Leon, going into the top of the standings.

Lindblad went into second right after, with still time for another opportunity at the pole.

Esterson went up into second, missing out on pole by only 0.045, with Sami Meguetounif in third.

Van Hoepen ended up in fifth, Charlie Wurz improved to sixth followed by the ART duo of Christian Mansell and Nikola Tsolov

Browning, during his last lap, was the one making the most of the track and achieving a very important pole position at his home Grand Prix for reinforcing his Championship options.

Leon ultimately lost the pole position but will start from first in tomorrow’s Sprint race.

It wasn’t the session that Prema’s driver Beganovic expected, as he was unable to complete any clean laps in the whole session. He will start only 19th.
