The Argentinean MotoGP event, which is set to run as the third round of the 2024 season, is in danger of being canceled due to financial cutbacks according to Motorsport.com.
The outing, which takes place at the Termas de Rio Hondo circuit in Northern Argentina, has been a mainstay on the premier class calendar since 2014. It failed to feature on the 2020 and 2021 schedules due to the COVID-19 pandemic and a devastating fire that facilitated a paddock rebuild in 2021.
Having returned to action in 2022, the event is now in serious danger of being canceled just weeks before it’s due to go ahead. According to Motorsport.com, budget cuts implemented by the nation’s new President Javier Milei are seriously threatening the contest’s future.
The Argentinean government provides significant funding for the race encounter, money which Milei will likely feel is unjustifiable bearing in mind the heavy cuts he is making elsewhere. The event’s cancellation would leave a three-week break between the Portuguese GP in late March and the Americas GP in mid-April.
The Hungarian GP outing – which is the sole event on the reserve list for 2024 – will likely struggle to be ready for the event given the lack of time. This would leave MotoGP organizers Dorna with little choice but to run a slightly shorter schedule this year, with the 22-strong calendar dropping to 21.
The Kazakhstan GP, set to get underway in mid-June at the Sokal International Circuit, is also seemingly in danger of not going ahead according to the same report. This would leave the 2024 fixture at the same 20 races run in 2023.
