Frederik Vesti claimed two Formula 2 Championship points as he took pole position for the Monaco Grand Prix on Friday.

The Dane set the fastest lap in Group B of Monaco’s unique two-part qualifying session with Victor Martina, who was fastest in Group A, lining up alongside him on the front row for the feature race.

Qualifying was interrupted at various stages by crashes for Arthur Leclerc, Jehan Daruvala and, at the end of the second session, Clement Novalak. Their incidents took the red flag tally up to six thus far throughout the F2 weekend.

Vesti’s championship rival Theo Pourchaire took second in Group B, with Zane Maloney behind in third. They were followed by Jack Crawford, Ayumu Iwasa and Amaury Cordeel.

Juan Manuel Correa was seventh in Group B, ahead of Clement Vovalak, Dennis Hauger and Ralph Boschung. Brad Benavides rounded off Group B’s 11 drivers.

Directly behind Martins in Group A was Jack Doohan, who was furious at a slow-moving Kush Maini as he endeavoured to go fastest. Richard Verschoor, Daruvala and Isaac Hadjar ended the first session third, fourth and fifth respectively.

They were followed by Kush Maini and Enzo Fittipaldi, while Oliver Bearman led Roy Nissany. Leclerc finished ahead of Roman Stanek, who came into qualifying with a grid penalty following his practice incident with Boschung.

With the second qualifying group ultimately deciding pole, Vesti and those behind him in Group B will start on the right-hand side on the grid for the feature, with drivers in Group A starting on the left.
