Formula 2 driver Amaury Cordeel has lost his road licence after committing a speeding offence in his home town of Temse, Belgium.

Cordeel was found guilty of going 179 km/h in a 50 km/h zone.

A video of the offence was posted on TikTok, and as a result, he was fined €3,600 and stripped of his licence for six months.

The incident occurred in December of 2020, however, the case was only heard earlier this month.

The video was brought to the attention of local police, who then investigated the matter.

Belgian media outlet HLN reports that Cordeel denies that he was at the wheel at the time, insisting: “I couldn’t possibly have driven, because I didn’t have a driver’s licence at all at the time.”

But HLN also reports that Cordeel didn’t inform the court that he purchased his licence for €450 on the internet.

Cordeel’s lawyer argued: “There can be no link whatsoever between the video and the fact that my client was driving.

“It was his father’s car, but otherwise there is enough doubt to say that he was not driving.”

Cordeel made his F2 debut in 2022, driving for Van Amersfoort Racing.

He will remain in the series next year, switching to Virtuosi Racing to compete alongside Jack Doohan.

Speaking recently to select media, including Motorsport Week, F2 CEO Bruno Michel confirmed that the series can’t ignore Cordeel’s offence.

“I don’t think there anything specific in our regulations that [says] you need to have a driver’s licence,” he said.

“But that’s probably something that we need to discuss with the FIA as well, and to see how we deal with that.

“We can’t ignore that fact, for sure. That’s something we will need to absolutely have a word with the FIA and see how we deal with that.”

Cordeel was also banned from the Silverstone F2 round earlier this year after picking up 12 points on his FIA Super Licence.
