Mortara and Günther to drive for Maserati in Season 9

Returning to motorsport after a 65-year hiatus to take over Venturi’s Formula E team, Maserati has confirmed Edoardo Mortara and Maximilian Günther as its driver line-up for Season 9.

65 years after their last outing in Formula 1, Maserati will make its long-awaited return to racing in 2023. After taking over Venturi’s entry for Season 9 of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, which will mark the beginning of Gen3, the team confirmed that Maximilian Günther will join Edoardo Mortara to complete its driver line-up.

“We’re proud to be back on track where we belong, powered by passion and innovative by nature. In the race for performance, we’ll be taking Maserati forward as we charge on the streets of the world’s most iconic cities,” said Giovanni Tommaso Sgro, Head of Maserati Corse.

“Formula E is more than just a racing series, for us, it’s a competitive platform bringing new technologies to accelerate the development of high efficiency electrified powertrains and intelligent software for our sport road cars.

“And, as the first Italian brand to join, we’re looking forward setting in motion our full-electric Folgore strategy.”

Mortara joined Venturi in 2017, going on to score six wins with the team. A title contender until the very last round of the past two seasons, the Swiss-Italian driver won the last race of the Gen2 era in Seoul this past August – although it was not enough to snatch the title from his rival Stoffel Vandoorne.

“The past five seasons have been some of the best of my career,” said Mortara, happy to continue his journey with the team he has become so familiar with.

“I’m looking forward to building upon our current success together in Gen3. As a Swiss-Italian, representing the Maserati brand in their return to international motorsport will be a great honour.”

“As the reigning Vice-World Champions, it’s a great time to be joining the team and I think Max and I will make a strong team as we take on the championship together.”

Holding the record as Formula E’s youngest race winner, Günther is seen as one of the biggest promises for the future of the all-electric racing series.

The 25-year-old German has scored three wins in his career, and is looking forward to improving his stats with the re-branded Maserati team.

“I have a lot of admiration for the team and their achievements in recent seasons,” he said. “They have been tough to beat and fully deserve their current status as Vice-World Champions. To be part of the Maserati brand’s return to racing in partnership with MSG Racing is a huge honour for me and I‘m looking forward to building something very strong together.”

Mortara and Günther have crossed paths in Formula E as early as 2016, and have maintained a good relationship on and off the track through the years.

“We’re both very detail oriented and driven for success,” said Günther. “I believe we’ll make a formidable team and I know that we will work hard together to ensure we extract the maximum performance together with the team. I can’t wait to get this exciting journey started.”

Team Principal James Rossiter, who joined Maserati from DS TECHEETAH, also believes their new line-up will be one of the strongest on the grid. With Mortara already cemented as one of the best drivers in Formula E, Rossiter sees Günther’s young talent as an equally strong promise for the upcoming season.

“In this pairing, we have a very strong driver lineup for Gen3,” he said. “We intend to be in a position to fight at the very front. We have exciting times ahead.”
