Mir ruled out of Aragon and Japan due to ankle injury

Joan Mir will miss the remainder of the Aragon Grand Prix event as well as next weekend’s Japanese GP after struggling with his fractured ankle throughout Friday at Aragon.

The 2020 MotoGP world champion was forced to miss the San Marino GP two weeks ago after suffering the ankle fracture as a result of a nasty crash on the opening tour of the Austrian GP a month ago, though elected to try and ride on Friday at Aragon.

Having managed 21st on the timesheets in FP2 on Friday afternoon, Mir attempted to ride in FP3 on Saturday morning but could manage only 18th overall once again as he continued to struggle with his injury, leading to the decision to pull out of the remainder of the weekend shortly before qualifying.

BREAKING NEWS
Joan has withdrawn from the #AragonGP after struggling with pain in his injured right ankle. He will also sit out the forthcoming #JapaneseGP.

Mir will therefore attempt to regain enough fitness for the Thailand GP in two weeks time, the Spaniard likely to replace by either Suzuki MotoGP test rider Sylvain Guintoli – who has now recovered from the injured wrist that ruled him out of replacing Mir at Misano and is running in the Bol d’Or with Suzuki’s endurance team this weekend – or San Marino stand-in Kazuki Watanabe.

Alex Rins will fly the flag on the sole remaining Suzuki for the rest of the Aragon outing, the three-time premier class race winner having secured a guaranteed pole-shootout berth with a run to tenth in FP3.
