Jack Doohan became a Formula 2 race winner on Saturday at the Silverstone Circuit, as he took the chequered flag in first place.
The Virtuosi Racing driver handled the start from fourth place on the grid and had to navigate difficult conditions as the track was still saturated following Formula 1’s qualifying session.
Doohan moved ahead of Juri Vips early on, and on lap six, he progressed into second place as both he and Enzo Fittipaldi overtook a struggling Jehan Daruvala.
Fittipaldi held the lead, but it wouldn’t be for long, as on the following lap, he made a mistake at Turn 3 and found himself running wide.
Doohan swept through to take the leading position and started to build a gap to the field behind.
The Australian driver looked set for a comfortable victory, however Ayumu Iwasa began to make a case and started to close in during the final laps, as he passed Fittipaldi shortly after Doohan’s move.
However, Iwasa ran out of time and had to settle for second place, while Fittipaldi clung on to third, crossing the line just one second ahead of Theo Pourchaire.
Pourchaire gained ever so slightly in the championship fight, as standings leader Felipe Drugovich was fifth on the road.
Frederick Vesti was sixth, ahead of Logan Sargeant who will start Sunday’s Feature race from pole position for the very first time.
Jehan Daruvala, who had reverse grid pole position, struggled throughout the 20 laps and collected the last point on offer in eighth place.
The Hitech Grand Prix duo of Marcus Armstrong and Juri Vips rounded out the top 10.
The Feature Race from Silverstone will get underway at 10:05 local time.
