Antonio Giovinazzi will switch to Formula E from 2022 after losing his seat with Alfa Romeo in Formula 1.

It was confirmed on Tuesday that Giovinazzi would not stay on with Alfa Romeo for 2022 after the squad opted to sign Guanyu Zhou.

Giovinazzi has now secured a 2022 Formula E drive with Dragon/Penske Autosport, alongside incumbent Sergio Sette Camara.

Giovinazzi, who previously tested Formula E machinery with Virgin, is set to make his debut in the championship in Saudi Arabia in January.

“As soon as it was made public that I would not be in Formula 1 next year, I have decided to participate in the Formula E world championship,” said Giovinazzi.

“It is a category which I always followed, I am thrilled to be part of Dragon/Penske in this all electric racing series which I have already tested three years ago.

“I would like to thank Jay Penske who immediately showed great interest for having me on board.”

Dragon/Penske Autosport finished 11th of the 12 teams that participated in last season’s championship.

Giovinazzi is set to test Dragon/Penske’s Formula E machinery during pre-season running, which takes place at Valencia, between Formula 1 grands prix in Qatar and Saudi Arabia.
