Matteo Nannini won out in Race 2 in FIA Formula 3 in Hungary to claim his maiden victory in the series.

The Italian began the race third on the grid before getting the jump on Roman Stanek before overtaking reverse-grid pole-sitter Enzo Fittipaldi a couple of laps to dominate the event.

The top ten after the first five laps were Nannini, Fittipaldi, Stanek, Alex Smolyar, Jack Doohan, David Schumacher, Dennis Hauger, Lorenzo Colombo, Clement Novalak and Logan Sargeant.

Olli Caldwell, one of the championship contenders, got caught up in a collision with Oliver Rasmussen in the opening laps, leaving himself with front wing damage and out of contention for points.

Another one of the title protagonists, Doogan struggled to maintain tyre grip on his Trident and the downfall from fifth began on Lap 16 when his team-mate David Schumacher nipped past at Turn 2 following a lock up from the Australian.

Championship leader Hauger was next to send his rival down the order with five laps remaining before Colombo, Novalak, Sargeant, Ayumu Iwasa, Arthur Leclerc and Caio Collet relegated Doohan to 13th by the finish.

On the penultimate lap, Hauger out-braked Schumacher for fifth place at Turn 1 and an extra point towards the title.

The chequered flag saw Nannini cross the line by over two seconds from Fittipaldi and Stanek, who both also stood on the F3 rostrum for the first time.

Smolyar was fourth followed by Hauger and Schumacher, with Colombo, Novalak, Sargeant and Iwasa picking up the last points.

Hauger’s fifth place has seen him extend his championship lead over his nearest rival Caldwell to 45 points with more race still to come this weekend.

Race 3 for FIA Formula 3 begins on Sunday morning at 10:45 track time.
