Formula 3 veteran Jake Hughes claimed victory in the opening Formula 3 race of the weekend in Spain on Saturday morning.

The Brit started second, behind Logan Sargeant, before pulling off a move around the outside into Turn 1 after the first Safety Car restart at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.

From there Hughes cruised clear to take the win, his first of the campaign, and sixth at this level, as he also bagged the extra points on offer for fastest lap.

Red Bull-backed Liam Lawson also made his way past title leader Sargeant at the same corner to come home second.

Sargeant therefore finished third, ahead of Clement Novalak and David Beckmann, who capitalised when Oscar Piastri went wide exiting the chicane just as the race restarted.

Theo Pourchaire claimed more points in seventh place while Alex Peroni, Richard Verschoor and Matteo Nannini rounded out the top 10, the nephew of ex-F1 racer Alessandro taking his and Jenzer’s first point of the year.

Sunday’s second race will begin at 08:45 BST.
