Charlie Kimball seals full-time IndyCar return with AJ Foyt Racing

AJ Foyt Racing has announced that Charlie Kimball will be driving the number 4 Chevrolet this upcoming season, displacing Matheus Leist.

Kimball has been racing in IndyCar since 2011 and moves over from driving for Carlin Motorsport the past two seasons.  Last year he shared driving duties with multiple other drivers and was only able to compete in seven races, earning two top-ten finishes.

Kimball hopes for consistency this year and is looking to build that into better and better results.  “My goal is to do everything I can, work with the team, and take AJ Foyt back to victory lane.”

Also in the announcement is that Kimball’s long-time sponsor Novo Nordisk will follow him to AJ Foyt Racing and will provide his primary livery for six of the races this season.

“I’m excited and honored to join AJ Foyt Racing and be a part of a team that has such deep roots in history at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and IndyCar,” said Kimball.

“Continuing the partnership with Novo Nordisk is also special since they have been an integral part of my career since I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.

“I’m more motivated than ever to work with the team to succeed at every IndyCar race in 2020.”

Kimball drove for Chip Ganassi for seven years before racing for two years at Carlin.  He has proven himself to be a consistent performer during that time, having posted top five finishes 13 times throughout his career.

Team President Larry Foyt is optimistic about getting the team back on track, saying “Charlie brings a great deal of experience and skill to the team. He is motivated to show what he can do behind the wheel, and his recent experience of helping develop cars will be beneficial as we work to get the 4 car moving up the grid.

“I want the effort we’re putting in to start showing some results.  We’re in a bit of a reset coming off a tough year.  Charlie is a technical driver, shows he can win”

Foyt has not announced who will be Kimball’s teammate but has hinted that Tony Kanaan is still with the team in some form and expects to make further announcements in the near future.
