Baku City Circuit reveals long-term sustainability plans

Organisers of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix have revealed proposals to make its event more environmentally friendly, in the wake of Formula 1’s eco-plans.

Formula 1 announced last month that it aspires to have a net-zero carbon neutral footprint by 2030, with the ambition of making all events sustainable by 2025.

On Tuesday the Baku City Circuit launched its own green programme, with the intention of using more sustainable materials at future race weekends, combined with a “large reduction” in single-use plastics.

The venue has linked up with the Baku Autism Centre, which will result in the Baku City Circuit providing the charity with sorted waste that will be delivered for recycling purposes.

The proceeds of this exchange will be donated to the Centre’s Rehabilitation Programme.

Baku City Circuit has also founded its own ‘Create Green Committee’ to undertake further investigations, while it has launched internal directives on saving paper, conserving energy and reducing water wastage.

BCC’s Executive Director, Arif Rahimov, commented: “It is no secret that the greatest threat facing mankind today is one of our own making.

“We at BCC therefore believe that it is incumbent on all of us to do our part to help reduce the devastating damage that climate change is inflicting upon our beautiful planet.

“I am fully aware that actions speak louder than words and this initiative sets a strong blueprint for our organisation to not only Think Green but to Act Green from this day forward.

“We urge all our friends and partners in the F1 community – as well as all F1 fans – to join the fight against waste and do everything in our powers to ensure a brighter future for the next generation.”

Azerbaijan joined the Formula 1 calendar in 2016; next year's event will take place from June 5th to 7th.
