Santiago E-Prix will go ahead despite Chile riots

Formula E has confirmed to Motorsport Week that the third-round of the championship in Santiago, Chile, will go ahead as planned in January.

It comes after the World Rally Championship was forced to cancel its round in the country due to ongoing political unrest, which has resulted in a state of emergency being declared.

The protests have stemmed from a government decision to raise prices on the capital city’s Santiago Metro transport system.

It’s understood Rally Chile is publicly funded and therefore the government doesn’t want to be seen spending vital public funds on a motorsport event.

Formula E’s Santiago E-Prix will however go ahead as planned, with a spokesperson confirming to Motorsport Week that its funding, which comes from the private sector and event sponsors, isn’t impacted.

Santiago joined the FE calendar last year where it took place on a temporary street circuit, but this year moved to a new venue at the O’Higgins Park.
