MP Motorsport's Richard Verschoor claimed victory at the 66th Macau Grand Prix, in a closely fought race with Red Bull-backed Juri Vips in the FIA Formula 3 World Cup.

Verschoor had started fourth but made a stunning start and immediately launched himself into second place on the opening lap behind Vips.

Vips' opening lap saw him have a 1.9s lead, but once Verschoor was up to speed, he was closing him down.

As the laps began to tick off, it appeared he didn't have an answer for the Estonian, however, a safety car for the wreckage of Ferdinand Habsburg at the Solitude Esses meant the Dutchman could close back up.

On the restart two laps later, Verschoor closed down Vips through Mandarin and made the pass around the outside into Lisboa for the race lead.

Despite a small mistake at the end of the VSC period for the stricken Sophia Floersch, Verschoor held off the Red Bull junior driver, even when he came under threat in the final laps to claim a rookie victory.

Despite having DRS for the final two laps, the Estonian couldn't find a way past and had to settle for second place.

Carlin's Logan Sargeant rounded out the podium places with an impressive drive from sixth place, the American on his first visit to the Guia circuit acquitted himself well. He was able to take third place from ART's Christian Lundgaard with a stunning pass around the outside of Lisboa on Lap 10.

Trident's Alessio Lorandi crossed the line in fifth place ahead of Callum Ilott who still has yet to find success in Macau after five attempts.

New Zealand's Liam Lawson and compatriot Marcus Armstrong stormed their way through the field  – after starting 20th and 17th respectively – to secure finishes inside the top 10 with Lawson crossing the line in seventh ahead of his former Toyota Racing Series rival.

HWA Racelab's David Beckmann and Frederick Vesti for Prema Theodore Racing would complete the top 10.

Double race winner Daniel Ticktum also stormed through the field from 26th on the grid to finish in 14th place.
