Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series driver Denny Hamlin plans to undergo surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder during the upcoming offseason, according to motorsports reporter for the Associated Press, Jenna Fryer.
Recovery from the surgery is expected to take 10 weeks, in time for the 2020 season-opening Daytona 500 and preliminary Daytona Speedweeks activity.
"Denny Hamlin tells me he will have offseason surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder,” Fryer [@JennaFryer] tweeted. "Recovery time is 10 weeks, so he would be ready for Daytona. But he did decline consideration for a #Rolex24 seat because of the recovery.”
Hamlin has undergone two surgeries for torn ACLs during his Cup Series careers, both of those injuries sustained while playing basketball. He underwent surgery to repair his left ACL ahead of a Cup Series off-weekend in 2010 and managed to not miss a race. He underwent a similar surgery to repair his right ACL within a week of the conclusion of the 2015 season.
Hamlin has five wins through the first 33 races of the 36-race season and is among the eight remaining drivers in the 2019 playoffs. He is second in the driver standings between Joe Gibbs Racing teammates Martin Truex Jr. and Kyle Busch.
