Robin Frijns ended the second day of Formula E pre-season testing at the top of the timesheets for Envision Virgin Racing.

With a simulation race taking place in the afternoon session, Frijns' fastest time of the day came from the morning, in which the Dutchman edged ahead of Maximilian Gunther by 0.057s after setting a 1:15.377s lap around the Ricardo Tormo Circuit.

Gunther maintained second in the order, with Alexander Sims, Oliver Rowland, Nico Muller, Antonio Felix da Costa and Brendon Hartley occupying third-seventh on the timesheets after failing to improve in the afternoon.

While da Costa topped the afternoon session for DS Techeetah, Jaguar Racing's James Calado was one of a handful of drivers who improved in the fourth testing period of the week, with the Formula E rookie setting the second-fastest time to cement eighth in the overall classification at the end of Day 2.

Mitch Evans followed his Jaguar team-mate in ninth while Lucas di Grassi completed the top 10 for Audi Sport Abt Schaeffler.

In the race simulation – conducted for the second consecutive year in order to trial a raft of regulation changes for the 2019/20 season – it was Mercedes EQ's Stoffel Vandoorne who was the first to cross the finishing line.

This was the silver lining in what was a difficult day for the Silver Arrows, however, with Mercedes facing limited running once more after Nyck de Vries crashed early on in the morning, with the German marque completing only 63 laps, bringing its total up to 145 with one day remaining.

Similarly, Porsche experienced a stop-start day, with Andre Lotterer crashing in the morning session before sitting out the simulation race with repairs ongoing. Team-mate Neel Jani meanwhile completed 45 laps en route to the 21st fastest time overall.

Sam Bird brought out the final red flag of the day in the second Envision Virgin car, with a total of six stoppages taking place on Day 2.

October 18 marks the final opportunity that teams will have to test their 2019/20 machinery ahead of the first race of Season 6 that will take place on November 22 in Ad Diriyah.
