The F1-supporting Japanese Formula 4 round, that was due to support this weekend's Grand Prix, has been cancelled due to the impending arrival of Typhoon Hagibis.
The storm is set to bring exceptionally heavy rain and high winds to the country through Saturday.
Formula 1 is currently monitoring the situation and no decision has yet been taken as to the course of action.
But on Thursday organisers of the Japanese Formula 4 series elected to abandon the upcoming round, which was due to be a non-championship event.
It is understood that the decision was taken for two reasons.
The main concern was that the location of the support race paddock, on the approach towards 130r, is on relatively low-lying ground, heightening the risk of flooding.
Its timetable was also subject to delays on account of Formula 1 receiving priority in the event of any schedule changes on Saturday.
Formula 4’s two races were scheduled for late Saturday afternoon and early on Sunday morning.
Rugby World Cup organisers have already abandoned two of Saturday’s planned matches in Japan due to the typhoon.
