Chip Ganassi Racing has announced that Marcus Ericsson will join the squad for the 2020 season, expanding the team to a three-car entry.

Ericsson joined the NTT IndyCar Series for the 2019 campaign after losing his Formula 1 race seat at Alfa Romeo, linking-up with the now named McLaren SP Racing team alongside James Hinchcliffe.

The Swede had a solid rookie campaign with his best result coming at the second race of the ‘Dual In Detroit’, where he picked up a second-place finish on the Belle Isle circuit.

His second season in the championship will be in the #8 car alongside the incumbent five-time series champion Scott Dixon and fellow Swede Felix Rosenqvist, who also enters his second season in IndyCar.

“First of all I’m extremely happy and proud to get the opportunity to join Chip Ganassi Racing,” said Ericsson.

“It’s a team of winners and their history speaks for itself. I’m very thankful that they believe in me and I will do everything I can to make 2020 another successful year for the team.

“I’m also very excited to work with two of the best drivers in the series in Scott and Felix. I’m looking forward to putting what I’ve learned this year to use in my second year in the NTT IndyCar Series.

”Team Owner Chip Ganassi added: “I think Marcus brings a lot of unique experience with him having competed in several championships around the world.

“When you have someone with that type of background, it gives him other points of reference that helps his ability to develop and add to the overall racing program.“We’re looking forward to seeing what Marcus can do alongside Scott and Felix.”

Ericsson remained the reserve driver for the Alfa Romeo Racing team in 2019, it has yet to be confirmed if he will remain in that role during the 2020 season.
