Marc Marquez believes it will be "almost impossible" to match or surpass Giacomo Agostini's achievements in motorcycle racing.

Agostini is regarded as one of, if not the greatest Grand Prix rider of all time, with 122 victories and 15 World Championships to his name – eight of which have come in the 500cc class.

Valentino Rossi is one premier class title shy of Agostini's tally and has nine in total, whilst Marquez has eight, six of which have come in the top class with his recent victory at the Thai GP handing him his most recent title success.

In terms of premier class victories, Rossi holds the top spot with a massive 89 wins, 21 more than Agostini and 36 more than Marquez. However the Spaniard has only been competing since 2013 – 13 seasons fewer than Rossi.

Speaking after his sixth MotoGP title, Marquez insisted beating Agostini's records wasn't something he'd thought about and believes such a feat would be "almost impossible".

"I get along very well with him and I have heard these statements," he said. "I don’t like the word impossible, I will never say it, but it is almost impossible.

"It means winning double what I have achieved so far. I have never been obsessed with a number or a name – I just enjoy my passion for racing. I feel very lucky that it is my job, where I try to do my best."

Marquez also spoke of the night that followed that victory, adding: "The party went well, I’m still getting my voice back! We celebrated the title as it deserves to be celebrated, because it is a World Championship and you never know when this dream is going to end, so you have to celebrate it to the fullest.

"We spent the night in Bangkok and had a good time with the whole team. I will not give details, but there was dancing, shouting, partying – a little bit of everything. This time there was no karaoke, but it wasn’t necessary."
