Felix Rosenqvist ‘shocked and disappointed’ by qualifiying penalty

Chip Ganassi's Felix Rosenqvist was left 'shocked and disappointed' at the IndyCar stewards for his penalty during qualifying for the Firestone Grand Prix of Monterrey.

Rosenqvist had begun his first flying lap in his qualifying group and lost control of his #10 NTT Data-Honda in T6, running wide and resulting in a half-spin, which saw him come to a stop in the middle of the track which caused a yellow flag.

Due to the resultant local yellow flag, the Swede was handed a penalty which consisted of his two fastest laps of the session being deleted.

With so little time left in the session, he was forced to jump onto the softer red alternate Firestone rubber earlier than desired and attempt to get enough laps completed before the session ended.

His only permitted lap left him with a time which wasn't good enough to make it into the Fast 12, forcing the rookie to start from 14th on the grid.

Rosenqvist had been fastest after combining the practice times from the weekend and tipped to be a favourite for the pole position before the incident.

Expressing his frustration on social media, the Swede posted: "Shocked and disappointed by IndyCar's decision to delete my two fastest laps, for causing a yellow in a period of qualifying where no one was even on the red tyres yet. Someone must really hate me up there.

"We were P1 on times, but will start last. Feel sorry for my guys."
