Ferrari doubles up with Misano MotoE race two victory

Matteo Ferrari secured the double as he cruised to victory in the second MotoE contest at Misano, extending his title advantage to 19 with only two races remaining.

Ferrari held his second place starting spot off the line and followed pole-man Alex De Angelis throughout the first tour, quickly closing in on the leader.

Not content to stay behind though, Ferrari passed the local man with a daring around-the-outside move at Turn 2 heading onto the second lap, quickly building an advantage as De Angelis began to struggle for speed.

Niccolo Canepa passed the Pramac racer into Turn 2 soon after, while Maria Herrera also took an opportunity to move into the podium places by snatching third a few corners later.

Hector Garzo meanwhile began to make progress much like he had during the first race yesterday, first passing De Angelis before making his way ahead of Herrera and Canepa into second with just a couple of laps to go.

He was unable to put any pressure on the flying leader though as he continued to streak away from everyone else, eventually crossing the line well over two seconds clear of Garzo, who held on despite a close final lap battle.

Canepa got an overlap heading onto the back straight for the final time and attempted a move into Turn 10 after Garzo ran slightly wide through the previous corner, but was unable to close as the Tech 3 man stayed on the outside line and dived back past into Turn 11.

Mattia Casadei then took advantage of the wrong-footed Canepa, moving past on the run to the line to steal third from the Italian at the last second to secure his first podium finish.

Maria Herrera scored her best MotoE result to date with fifth, while Eric Granado led home Jesko Raffin on the sole Dynavolt Energica machine.

Bradley Smith was a disappointing eighth after struggling to make much progress from his lowly starting position, while Nico Terol took ninth ahead of Mike Di Meglio, who also had a tough time moving forward on his Marc VDS-run bike.

Ferrari’s win now moves him 19 points clear of Garzo at the head of the championship standings, while De Meglio slips behind Smith to fourth overall heading to the finale at Valencia in a couple of months time.
