Moto3 title challenger Aron Canet will make the step up to Moto2 next year with the Angel Nieto Moto2 squad, the team has announced.

The Jorge Martinez run team-formerly known as Aspar- currently runs ex-British Superbike racer Jake Dixon in his rookie year at Grand Prix level, but results have been hard to come by.

Canet meanwhile lies second in the Moto3 rider’s championship to Lorenzo Dalla Porta, having secured a pair of victories with the Max Biaggi owned MAX Racing team..

The Spaniard is contesting his fourth year in the lightweight class, so far managing a best championship position of third in his sophomore season in 2017 with the Estrella Galicia team.

It is not yet known what machinery he’ll be competing on next year, with current Angel Nieto partner KTM pulling out from all Moto2 activity for 2020.

“I am excited about the step up to Moto2. After four seasons in Moto3 I am fighting for the title but I have decided to take the decision already to move up in category and to do it with the Ángel Nieto Team,” said Canet.

“Jorge Martínez ‘Aspar’ is an important figure in motorcycling and he and his team are offering me everything I want, which is a local team and a family environment.

“I am happy to be joining the Ángel Nieto Team, who have celebrated a lot of titles, won a lot of races and even more podiums. They have a lot of experience and will be able to give me the advice I need to help my career progress.”

Angel Nieto team principle, Jorge Martinez, added;

“It is very important for us to bring a rider like Aron Canet into our project. He is a winning rider, who is fighting this season to become Moto3 World Champion. Aron has matured a lot in recent seasons and in 2019 he is proving that in terms of his riding he is a level above his rivals.

“As a Valencian team we are delighted to sign a local rider and it gives me even more pleasure that he came through one of the projects I started at the Circuit Ricardo Tormo – the Cuna de Campeones – as did the likes of Nico Terol, Sergio Gadea and Héctor Faubel, and others.”
