Helmut Marko: Pierre Gasly had to go because ‘he doesn’t like to overtake’

Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko has given a scatching explanation as to why Pierre Gasly has been demoted, with Alexander Albon replacing him at Red Bull.

It was announced on Monday that Albon would drive alongside Max Verstappen for the remainder of the season, with Gasly taking up the Anglo-Thai racer's Toro Rosso seat.

Marko is known for his honesty and his demanding expectations and in response to the shake-up, explained why he made the call to drop Gasly.

"Gasly has problems in traffic. He loses places and he doesn't like to overtake either," Marko told Auto Bild. "That's the reason why we had to react and give Albon the chance.

"He [Albon] will finish the season [with Red Bull] and Gasly takes over his Toro Rosso and then we'll see who drives alongside Max next year."

Marko praised rookie Albon's performance so far this season, adding: "A huge debut season so far. He's squeezed everything out of the car."

Marko also expanded on Red Bull's struggles this season, but believes they've turned a corner and have now surpassed Ferrari as Mercedes closest rival.

"We built a car with too little downforce. We simply underestimated how much progress our new engine partner Honda has made. They delivered more power than we thought.

"That's why we originally wanted to compensate for the missing power with a chassis that is aerodynamically very efficient.

"We have corrected that and at the last races we were almost on par with Mercedes. We have definitely overtaken Ferrari and will be competitive on every kind of track in the second half of the season."
