Lewis Hamilton: No intention of retiring any time soon

Lewis Hamilton has reiterated that he has no intention of walking away from Formula 1 in the near future, stressing he is “excited” by what he and Mercedes can still achieve.

Hamilton has taken 81 wins and five titles during his distinguished career, and currently leads the 2019 championship by 62 points, leaving him well-placed to take a sixth crown.

Hamilton is contracted to Mercedes through the end of 2020, giving him the opportunity to exceed Michael Schumacher’s record win tally, and match the German’s number of championship victories.

“I’ve watched sports, different sports, and I see, including our one, I see people that I’ve grown up watching, who have stopped and moved onto something else,” he said.

“Obviously I’m in a sport where I am one of the older drivers so I have this different perspective, naturally 22 to being 34 is  a much different perspective, but it’s been a phenomenal journey.

“We’ve just been going from strength to strength, the majority of people are still the same people from when I joined the team, and this long, long journey we’ve got on together has been remarkable.

“Right now I’m excited to see what more we can do together and what’s next.

“I honestly don’t know why some people decide to stop at the times they decide to stop, but I tell you I love driving.

“I really, really love the challenge and arriving each weekend and digging into the data. I just love that rapport you have with this group of people.

“One day I will have to stop but right now I feel fantastic physically, generally, this year, and mentally, so I currently don’t have any plans on stopping any time soon.

“There’s more to do, there’s more to win, there’s more to achieve together, inside and outside of the car, within the sport and outside of the sport.”

Hamilton has started 241 grands prix during his 12 years in Formula 1, putting him 10th on the list of all-time entrants.
