Pierre Gasly says he and Red Bull need to understand why his performance deteriorated throughout the Hungarian Grand Prix weekend, as his struggles continued.
Gasly led the way in a rain-hit second practice session on Friday but qualified only sixth, almost a second down on pole-sitting team-mate Max Verstappen, and lost further ground at the start.
Gasly recovered positions to finish sixth but finished behind McLaren’s Carlos Sainz Jr. and was lapped by the sister car of Verstappen.
“It started pretty well during the weekend, and then from FP3 onwards just lost a lot of pace and struggled a lot more with grip in general,” said Gasly.
“Qualifying was difficult, it was already the case. It was not maximised, but we clearly didn’t have the similar pace to fight at the top, and [in the race] was again the same.
“So we need to understand exactly why we lost so much pace and struggled that much, and come back strongly in Spa.”
Gasly underlined that grasping a more consistent feeling from the RB15 is vital in his bid to address his current form.
“For me it is like there is [confidence] sometimes, and then sometimes it goes away,” he said.
"We will try to find a bit more consistency in that feeling, and we will have a couple of weeks with the guys to really understand everything, and understand when we are fast and when we are not, for what reasons, and make sure we come back stronger.”
