Robert Kubica will switch to Williams’ spare chassis for the remainder of the German Grand Prix weekend.
It was confirmed on Saturday morning that Williams, along with Toro Rosso, had broken the overnight curfew restrictions, the first breach of the year for both teams.
Kubica had spent Friday running with the update package but said his programme was “compromised” from the outset, with suggestions that a piece of bodywork had become detached.
Both Kubica and team-mate George Russell will use the updated components from Saturday’s third practice session, but the Pole will do so in a new chassis, after damage was found on his FW42.
“We found some damage whilst rebuilding Robert’s car overnight which was not repairable at the track,” confirmed Williams.
“We decided to change to the spare chassis for the rest of the weekend.”
Williams added that it has not yet determined what caused the damage, outlining that its focus was “on changing it [the chassis] and getting it back to the factory for repairs.”
Williams is in the midst of its worst season in Formula 1, having spent 2019 rooted to the rear of the field, substantially off the pace of the midfield group.
