Robin Frijns happy that Season 5 is over after taking second Formula E win

Robin Frijns has said that he is happy that Formula E's fifth season of competition is over after the Dutchman secured his second win in the series at the final race of the 2018/19 campaign in New York.

Frijns' win at the second race of the New York City E-Prix marked one of the driver's most dominant performances in Formula E, taking the chequered flag with an advantage of over three seconds from his nearest rival.

The Dutchman started the final race of the season from second on the grid after getting beaten to pole position by BMW i Andretti Motorsport's Alexander Sims before securing a poor start to the E-Prix, dropping to third when Sebastien Buemi overtook the Envision Virgin driver.

Recovering from his poor getaway, Frijns overtook Buemi to move into second place with 31-minutes + 1 lap of racing remaining before clearing Sims for the lead 10-minutes later, going on to take the chequered flag and secure 25 championship points.

Victory in New York also marked Frijns' first points finish since the Paris E-Prix which also marked the Dutchman's most recent win, with four non-scoring rounds following from Monaco-New York Race 1.

Reflecting on his second Formula E win, Frijns said that he was happy that Season 5 was over, with Envision Virgin ending the campaign on a positive note before preparing for Season 6 later this year:

"Seb [Buemi] caught me at the start and despite being behind him I felt very strong – I felt I had better pace than him," said Frijns.

"I think that the only opportunity I had to overcome Buemi was when I was in Attack Mode and he wasn’t, so I took a shot which was clean, hard but very good from both sides. I’m happy this season is over.

"The last time I scored points was a win in Paris and four times, no points," he continued. "We were out of championship contention and we had a lot of issues.

"[In Race 1] we had an issue again and I’m just satisfied that it all came together again to give something back to the team because they worked very hard for it.

"We had so many problems in the last four races and the team was a bit down, I was a bit down and nothing seemed to work out for us.

"We were only on the unlucky side and I just wanted this so bad and now we can go back home and prepare for next season on a good note."

Formula E's aforementioned Season 6 campaign will commence on November 22 in Ad Diriyah.
