Rene Rast will start from pole for DTM's second race at the Norisring on Sunday, following up his incredible victory from yesterday where he stalled, dropped to the back and fought his way back to the front.
The Audi Team Rosberg driver posted a time of 46.146s to pip team-mate Jamie Green by the tightest of margins at just 0.007s, with the British driver completing the front-row.
Audi's Nico Muller posted an identical time to Green at 46.153, but because he set it later in the session, he starts third alongside Loic Duval in an Audi 1-2-3-4.
Fifth-placed Philipp Eng was the highest-placed non Audi as he qualified his BMW on the third row, just 0.046s shy of the pole time in what was an incredibly tight session with the top ten covered by just over four-tenths.
Mick Rockenfeller was sixth ahead of Bruno Spengler, Sheldon Van Der Linde, Marco Whittmann and Jonathan Aberdein.
The highest-placed Aston Martin was Daniel Juncadella in 13th with a time just 0.566s shy of pole.
The session saw a brief red flag after Timo Glock came to a halt at the Dutzendteichkehre, but was swiftly recovered. He starts last in 18th.
