The Macau Grand Prix will continue to be run using FIA Formula 3 cars, with confirmation that the World Cup this November will feature the new-specification package.
As part of the FIA’s streamlining of the single-seater ladder the new-for-2019 FIA Formula 3 Championship was formed, in effect merging the FIA's European Formula 3 with the Bruno Michel-run GP3 Series.
The Macau Grand Prix was previously run to the old-specification Dallara F317 package but on Thursday it was confirmed that the latest specification cars will be used.
Circuit upgrades are set to take place in order for the new package to be used, most notably reprofiling of the barriers at Lisboa, where Sophia Floersch crashed heavily in 2018.
The Macau Grand Prix will not be part of the eight-event 2019 Formula 3 season, which will conclude in Russia in September.
The entry list and format has not yet been revealed by the FIA.
"The FIA F3 World Cup is one of the ultimate tests for young drivers, and we have worked hard to ensure it remains among the most prestigious events on the motorsport calendar,” said Stefano Domenicali, the ex-Ferrari chief now heading up the FIA’s single-seater commission.
"We are currently enjoying a hugely competitive and hard-fought FIA Formula 3 Championship season, and the prospect of seeing this impressive grid line up in Macau is very exciting.
"These cars are more powerful than the previous iterations of F3, and have the latest safety features for single-seater machines. Couple this with the changes being made to the Guia Circuit this year, and I’m looking forward to a safe and spectacular FIA F3 World Cup."
