Max Verstappen ends Mercedes domination with thrilling Austrian GP win

Max Verstappen put a halt to the dominance of Mercedes in Austria as he claimed a thrilling victory in the closing laps of the race with a late pass on Ferrari's Charles Leclerc for the lead.

The Dutchman, who started second, endured a horrid start as he bogged down on the line, dropping back to eighth behind his team-mate Pierre Gasly, but drove a brilliant race to close up to the front before launching a late attack to claim back-to-back wins in Austria.

The victory is also Honda's first since returning to Formula 1 and Red Bull's first of the 2019 season – the victory does however remain under investigation with the move for the lead arousing the interest of the stewards as Verstappen and Leclerc made contact.

Leclerc went on to finish second despite leading for the majority of the race, only conceding the top spot when he made his first stop and then on lap 69 of 71 when Verstappen moved ahead. He remained within 2.7 seconds of Verstappen as they crossed the finish line, pending any penalty.

Mercedes' Valtteri Bottas completed the podium, a distant third with a 16s gap as Mercedes didn't have the pace to challenge Ferrari or Red Bull, with both cars suffering from cooling issues.

Sebastian Vettel was the only leading driver to make two stops as was able to come through from ninth to finish fourth, passing Lewis Hamilton on the penultimate lap to push the Briton down to fifth.

The German suffered a poor first stop as Ferrari weren't ready with his tyres, which might have cost him a podium position as he finished under a second adrift of the Finn.

McLaren's Lando Norris was sixth, geating Pierre Gasly over the line with the second McLaren of Carlos Sainz coming through from 19th to finish eighth. The two Alfa Romeos completed the top ten with Kimi Raikkonen leading team-mate Antonio Giovinazzi.

The race was the perfect tonic following what was a boring French GP and brings Mercedes' total domination to an end.
