Change in set-up philosophy assisted pole run – Charles Leclerc

Charles Leclerc says a change in set-up philosophy assisted his cause en route to pole position for Formula 1’s Austrian Grand Prix.

Ferrari has held a straight-line speed advantage this year but has struggled at some events, particularly through slow- and medium-speed corners.

The layout of the Red Bull Ring was expected to suit the strengths of the SF90 and Leclerc set two laps quick enough for pole position, securing top spot for the second time this year.

“I think our main issue in the last few grands prix was the front,” said Leclerc. “We didn’t have enough front. I think this weekend it was quite a bit better.

“We tried different set-ups, also set-up philosophy, and it seems to be a bit better.

“It doesn’t mean that we’ll do a big step for the other races, but for here, it works pretty well.

“I think the most time gained on the second sector is because of a stronger form compared to the last grand prix.”

Ferrari has yet to win a race this season but Leclerc expressed confidence over the inherent long-run pace of the SF90 at the venue.

“I think on Friday it didn’t look bad compared to Mercedes but also Red Bull,” he said.

“We are pretty happy I think. We are competitive this weekend. I think tomorrow the start will be very important.

“There is a long straight after it, but normally we are quite fast on the straights so we can keep that first position in the first three corners. But the pace itself looks promising.”
