FIA to review F2 suspension rules amid driver ban

The FIA is to review the regulations regarding driver suspensions in Formula 2, following the manner in which a ban was issued to Mahaveer Raghunathan.

Raghunathan has been involved in a number of incidents in the sport’s feeder series through 2019, with the MP Motorsport driver also running substantially off the pace.

Raghunathan was judged to have transgressed under the Virtual Safety Car three times during Saturday’s Feature Race, and received nine penalty points on his license.

That brought his total up to 12, triggering a one-round ban, which he will serve in Austria.

But as the suspension only starts from the following event it meant he was free to compete in Sunday’s Sprint Race, in spite of the penalty handed down.

“It’s something we had a long chat about,” said FIA Race Director Michael Masi.

“I think it is probably an unintended consequence when it is a… the penalty points regulations, from my understanding, obviously not having been around when they were designed, were designed in a Formula 1 event, with one race. Not two.

“The regulations are quite specific, being effectively a mirror to a degree of each other, that it’s non-participation in the next event.

“An event is Thursday to Sunday, the entire weekend.

“So it’s one of those that we had a long chat about, but he’s allowed to participate [in the Sprint Race].

“It’s something that we’ll have a look at with the steering group and go from there, which is how those regulations are formed.”

Raghunathan is the first driver to be suspended from a Formula 2 event since the list of infractions racked up by Santino Ferrucci last year.

Ferrucci did not return to Formula 2 in the wake of a two-event ban and instead switched focus to IndyCar.
