Ferrari turned the tables on Mercedes as Charles Leclerc led a 1-2 for the team during second practice in Canada, while Lewis Hamilton truncated his session after hitting the wall.

Mercedes dominated the opening practice session, with Hamilton ahead of team-mate Valtteri Bottas, but come the afternoon Ferrari led the way.

Leclerc posted the pace-setting time of 1:12.177 to edge team-mate Sebastian Vettel by 0.074s, while Bottas was 0.134s behind the Monegasque driver.

Hamilton finished only sixth, with his best time coming on Mediums, after he hit the wall through Turn 9.

Hamilton sustained damage to the right-rear of his W10 and, while he was able to return to the pit lane unaided, repairs consigned him to the garage for the remainder of the session.

The reigning World Champion completed just eight laps through the course of the 90-minute session.

Red Bull’s challenge wilted as Max Verstappen clipped the wall exiting the final chicane and abandoned his Soft tyre run, while a struggling Pierre Gasly classified only 12th.

Carlos Sainz Jr. put in a superb effort to finish fourth overall, just 0.376s behind leader Leclerc, and a full three-tenths clear of nearest rival Kevin Magnussen, who took fifth for Haas.

Racing Point’s Sergio Perez was seventh, in front of Renault pair Daniel Ricciardo and Nico Hulkenberg, while Perez’s team-mate Lance Stroll capped the top 10, within a second of Leclerc.

Lando Norris took 11th, ahead of the aforementioned Red Bull drivers, while Toro Rosso duo Alexander Albon and Daniil Kvyat were 14th and 15th respectively.

Alfa Romeo finished towards the rear of the pack, with Kimi Raikkonen 16th and Medium-shod Antonio Giovinazzi 18th, the Italian joining the session late after taking on a new gearbox in the wake of his FP1 prang.

Haas’ Romain Grosjean split the Alfa Romeo drivers while Williams again finished at the rear of the field, with George Russell in front of Robert Kubica.

Saturday’s third practice session is scheduled for 11:00 local time
