Simon Pagenaud topped the speed charts with a Penske 1-2 over team-mate Josef Newgarden at end of the penultimate practice session ahead of the 103rd running of the Indianapolis 500.
The Frenchman carried the form which took him to pole position in the #22 Menards-Chevrolet; a late effort in the session saw him snatch top spot away from Newgarden with a 228.441mph lap.
The two-hour post-qualifying practice is used by the teams to shake down the cars after changing them over from qualifying trim into their race day set-ups and make any further necessary changes as they readjust to running in traffic again.
Arrow Schmidt Peterson Motorsports' James Hinchcliffe quickly brushed off any residual stress of having to qualify for the race on bump day; he put in a 227.994mph best speed to end the afternoon in third in his #5T car.
Like Hinchcliffe, who'll start from 31st place on Sunday, Dixon will begin the race from the outside of the sixth row, in 18th; both drivers appear to have solid race setups on their cars as the Kiwi placed fourth in the speed charts with a 227.951mph run.
Andretti Autosport's Alexander Rossi rounded out the top five will his best lap of 227.860mph.
There were two cautions in the session, the first was for a track inspection by race control. The second, however, came out for Hinchcliffe's team-mate Marcus Ericsson who made glancing contact with the wall on the exit of Turn 3 after running wide while being checked up by fellow compatriot Felix Rosenqvist.
Ericsson swiftly headed to the pits to get the car checked over.
The 33 drivers will get one final 90-minute practice session on Thursday's Carb Day ahead of the main event on Sunday.
