Monaco E-Prix a story of ‘what could have been’ – Mitch Evans

Mitch Evans has said that the Monaco E-Prix will always be a story of "what could have been," with a post-qualifying penalty damaging the New Zealander's hopes of a podium in the Principality.

Winning the Rome E-Prix earlier this year, Evans' impressive Season 5 continued on the streets of Monaco, with the driver ending qualifying as the third fastest man on track, with this becoming second following the application of a grid penalty for Nissan e.dams' Oliver Rowland.

After qualifying, it emerged that Evans was under investigation, with Evans switching the power mode on his Jaguar I-TYPE 3 to to 250kW too early, with this meaning that the driver was deemed to have gained an unfair advantage for his sole Super Pole run.

This resulted in the driver being handed an official reprimand – the third of his season – which, in turn, resulted in the Kiwi being handed a 10-place grid penalty for the race, meaning that he would start from 12th on the grid as opposed to second.

"Obviously I’ll always be thinking about what could have been. It could have been a different result if I had started P2 which is where I would have been. It was a small mistake with big consequences," said Evans.

Starting from 12th, Evans recovered well in the race, finishing in seventh place at the chequered flag before later inheriting sixth after BMW's Antonio Felix da Costa was disqualified from the final result.

"I think we recovered well from where we started which is good and we definitely had one of the fastest racecars," he added.

"We’ll definitely be taking that qualifying pace with us to Berlin. It’s one of the trickiest parts of the day. We won’t get caught up in it, we scored points and that’s really important for our Championship race.

"There’s definitely a few lessons to be learnt, but I’m looking forward to getting back on track in Berlin."

Evans' team-mate Alex Lynn also secured points in Monaco by finishing in eighth – his first of the season after replacing inaugural series champion Nelson Piquet Jr from the Rome E-Prix.

"It was a bit of a chaotic race behind the wheel," said Lynn. "To get my first points for the team is amazing. It was a positive day and the car has been quick in all the sessions.

"I just missed out on Super Pole by less than one tenth of a second. I’m pleased to get on the scoreboard and a big thank you to my team. I’ll take that positive momentum forward to Berlin."

The aforementioned Berlin E-Prix will take place on May 25 at the Flughafen Tempelhof Circuit and marks the penultimate round of the European leg of the 2018/19 calendar.
