Kimi Raikkonen has been disqualified from qualifying for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, with the Finnish racer starting from the pit lane as a result.
In a chaotic qualifying session for the fourth race of the 2019 season, Raikkonen piloted his Alfa Romeo to ninth on the grid – a result that would later become eighth as a result of a 10-place grid penalty for team-mate Antonio Giovinazzi having exceeded his engine allocation.
Following qualifying, it emerged that the Finn was under investigation for an alleged breach of Article 3.9.8 of the FIA Formula One Technical Regulations with the front wing flap of his car deflecting more than 5mm under a load of 60 N.
After an investigation, it was found that Raikkonen's front wing did deflect by more than 5mm under a load of 60 N, with this resulting in the driver's subsequent disqualification.
As a result of Raikkonen's disqualification, Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, who crashed out of qualifying, will start from eighth place, helped by Giovinazzi's penalty while McLaren's Carlos Sainz Jr and Renault's Daniel Ricciardo will complete the top 10 on the starting grid.
The Azerbaijan Grand Prix will commence later today 16:10 at local time.
