WEC expects 2019/20 Sebring decision ‘in coming days’

FIA World Endurance Championship boss Gerard Neveu expects a decision on whether the series can race at Sebring next year “very quickly”.

WEC penned a one-year deal to run a back-to-back event with IMSA at the weekend, with WEC’s 1000 Miles of Sebring taking place on Friday, followed by IMSA’s Sebring 12 Hours.

There has yet to be any news on extending that to 2020, though a 2019/20 provisional calendar had the event listed for an unconfirmed date in March, therefore signalling WEC’s interest in repeating the deal.

Neveu revealed on Friday during a press conference ahead of the race that they were waiting on IMSA to give the go-ahead – which was unlikely to happen until the ’19 race was run and analysed as to whether it was a success.

"It’s a good demonstration that when we are looking in the same direction, sharing the same interests, we can provide something very serious and very attractive for the fans," he said.

"From our point of view, it’s clearly a wish [to continue], because we feel this is a profitable model.

"But this is not our home. We are in the US, IMSA’s home, so if IMSA is ready to welcome us next year, then yes, this is the plan from our side. This is the wish.”

Neveu said he was expecting a final decision in the “coming days” and believed it would be a positive outcome.
